OUTDOOR PATIO TIPS & IDEAS
Creating the ultimate outdoor patio can make all the difference when it comes to getting the most out of your space. Maybe you just moved in or you want to create a more social environment. Regardless, let’s go over some of the key ways you can up your patio game.
Let's Talk Layout
Decide what you want your focal point to be. When deciding this, consider what your ideal use is for the space.
Is it a getaway to read a good book? Your focal point could be a stylish cozy furniture piece.
Is it to socialize with friends? It could be a firepit or coffee table to gather around. Focus on what encourages the goal of your space the most!
A big element of layout is space identity. You want to define the boundaries of your patio. This could be with your furniture layout creating a distinct gather space, plants acting as dividers, or hanging curtains. This is a good time to consider how much privacy you prefer!
Layers and Textures
A key to a balanced design is layers. You can add layers to your patio through the furniture and décor. You could buy an outdoor patio rug and style your furniture with outdoor pillows and blankets. Tip: Look for products with washable fabrics! If you don’t like the look of a fabric rug another option is a turf. This will replicate a backyard feeling. This is a great option if you are working with a small space like a balcony and don’t have a lot of yard space.
A popular favorite is incorporating ottoman poufs. These add an inviting touch to your space and can be a great accent piece. Selecting furniture with different textures and finishes will give the space an inviting appeal.
Consider how you will work with color. If you select a neutral as your base, tie colors in through the accessories. If go with a bold statement piece like a colored sofa, balance it out with some wood tones and neutral accessories.
Make Décor Functional
Adding small décor details can go a long way. You can incorporate the functional items on your patio into your décor. You could get a decorative table tray and place a citronella candle with a cute lighter and some coasters. You could add wood planters and put your plants in decorative colored pots. A little goes a long way so don’t feel the need to clutter up your space with décor. Find ways you can incorporate your style into what you are already doing.
Make a Lasting Space
When selecting finishes, think about cleanability and durability. You never know what the wind might blow. You want this to be a lasting space. Here are some things to keep in mind:
Look for Polyolefins, high UV Polyesters, and solution dyed acrylics. These will fade slower in the sun than other fabrics. This is especially important if you have an uncovered patio.
For cleanability and durability go for the solution dyed acrylics. These are easy to clean and have a higher thread count which makes them harder to rip. If you have children and pets this may be your move!
If you have a covered space and want fabric with a softer hand, look for spun polyester options. These are often cost effective and easy to find. These are best integrated into your pillows, ottomans, and other accessories that are in low light areas.
Be cautious with putting indoor fabrics and materials outdoors for long periods of time. Indoor materials do not have the same coating and finishes that avoid molding, rusting, and rotting.
Plant, Plants, Plants!
Your patio is the perfect opportunity to showcase your green thumb. Plants are a great element to add to your patio. Plants naturally create more privacy and space identity. If you are a guilty plant killer like me, there is no shame in faux plants!
It’s important to consider the amount of sunlight you get when deciding which plants are best for your space. If you like greenery, go for species like moneywort, boxwood, or Croton. If you like a pop of color a few great options are Lantana, Pentas, and Angelonia. Tip: Lavender smells amazing and also keeps the bugs away!
Light it Up
Adding ambient light makes a patio space cozy and welcoming. You can never go wrong! A popular choice is string lights or fairy lights. These are often an affordable option and easy to set up. If you are doing a more intensive remodel. Adding a pendant light or wall sconces can elevate your space. Consider adding a dimmer switch to give yourself flexible lighting options. If you’re looking for a resourceful option, you may like solar lights. Take advantage of the sun!
Comfort is Key
It won’t matter if your patio is beautiful if it is not comfortable. You want this to be a space that you want to spend long periods of time in. A place to have your morning coffee or a relaxing wine night with your favorite people. Don’t worry, function and beauty can co-exist!
