ORGANIC MODERNISM

You’ve probably heard the term “Organic Modern” a lot recently. This style of interior design has become immensely popular over the last year. We have shifted away from cold modern gray tones. So what exactly is this style? How do you create it? Here we break down the Organic Modern style and give examples and tips of how you can achieve this aesthetic in your space. You will understand the overall concepts of this design style and ways to implement it into your space.

What is Organic Modernism?

To start, let’s talk about what Organic Modern means. Organic is based on the idea of nature and authenticity. It blends the laws of nature with the built environment creating a co-existing balance and harmony. This style prides itself in its use of natural colors, materials, and textures. A lot of this style replicates elements you will see in the natural world. It’s inspired by what is already around us.

Modern is known for its minimalism and order. Modern design is predictable and rigid. We all know the saying “opposites attract”. That is what we are seeing with these two styles coming together. When combined, they create a causal elegance balancing each other out. The organic shapes soften the modern style while keeping its luxurious essence. The organic elements brings modern design a needed uncertainty and softness that opens a new level of creativity.

Now that we know what it is, how do we achieve it?

Natural and Neutral Color Palette

Organic Modern is known for feeling warm and soothing. It is similar to how nature is known for making humans feel peace and belonging. To replicate this, the color palette emphasizes neutrals and earth tones. You will see a variety of beiges, creams, and grays which are then complimented with rich earthy accent colors like blues, greens, and oranges. These colors tend to have a muted undertone. You won’t see many vibrant and bright colors. You will want to pick a neutral as your base and then add the color through your accessories. Tip: Try to bring accent color through different textures and materials.

Variety of Textures

When you look at nature you see that it is filled with different textures that live in harmony. That is also true in organic modern design. This style subtly layers and mixes textures creating a more authentic environment. Texture helps the space feel warm, cozy, and inviting. It makes it feel real and helps us feel connected to our space. When picking materials, stick to natural materials like cotton, linen, sheepskin, stones, and wood. You can add textures through accessories like area rugs, pillows, and wall/window coverings. Layer contrasting materials. Add a sheepskin rug below a wood chair. The contract in these two materials will balance each other out.

Symmetry is an important factor when layering your space. Physically and visually. If you layer pillows on your sofa make sure not to have them all to one side. You could center them, or you could have a few on the right and a few on the left. Another example is with color. Your eye is naturally drawn to darker colors. So when considering color try to equally distribute throughout the space. Don’t put all the dark elements in one corner. Use color intentionally. If you want attention drawn to a statement piece, make it a rich color like a burnt orange or velvety green.

Furniture & Décor

Think about flow and serenity when laying out your space. Again, not just the physical flow of the space but also the visual flow. Keep things simple and try to stay away from anything flashy and distracting. This style is based on minimalism. So think of what you want your foundation pieces to be. It’s about quality over quantity.

This style has a lot of fun with asymmetrical organic forms. This is the time for unique cozy sofas to shine. Look for furniture with gentle curves and edges. This style contains an element of surprise while staying graceful.

Craftsman style furniture has been making an appearance through wood furniture pieces and accents. Much of the furniture is primarily based on concepts from modern design by expressing the minimalistic style. Even the organic forms tend to promote minimalism.

Don’t forget foliage. Lush houseplants are great to incorporate. This could be a large house plant in the corner or a small décor piece on your coffee table. Bringing the outside in adds a calming and relaxing energy to complete your space.

This style is known for being curated and without clutter. When selecting décor keep it sophisticated and stay away from the tacky. Keep your selections intentional! Look for organic silhouettes, curves, and natural materials.

Organic Modernism redefines modern design. It keeps order and attention architecturally and is softened with added organic elements. It is a warm approach to modern design. This style is making waves and is not going anywhere for a long time!
